Styles and Conventions of Music Videos

Genre- the generic type of music video for a specific genre of music. Rap- Rick Ross- Pirates

I believe that his record label chose this type of video because it is common of the genre and Rick Ross is a rapper who is also common of his music type. I believe they played safe with this video. The impact on the audience is that they get to see a bit of his lifestyle and how it would be if they were a rapper.

This would spur on teenage boys to become rappers for the money. If I was going to choose a song in the rap genre I would ensure that I would display as much money and riches as possible like in this video.

Performance- This consists of the artist performing, it can either be clips of them performing on stage from their tour, a performance but not to an audience (to the camera), and a pretend concert with a fake audience.
Beyonce- End Of Time

I think the reason that Beyonce's record label chose to have a performance video to display how good she is live. At the time this video came out Beyonce was pregnant and had a concert coming out. By displaying how she performs would entice people to go watch her. I believe that if the song I chose sounded professional and that it could include dance routines then I think snippets from a live performance would be good.

Narrative- The storyline that is in the music video with either actors or usng the artists themselves. Ludacris- Runaway Love

I think Ludacris's record label chose to use a narrative because this song and his words are very story telling and emotional. He raps the song as if he were telling someone and the best way to portray this is to also see what the is saying as if it was a short film.

at 0.41-0.50 the lyrics are- Now little lisa is only one years old, She’s trying to figure out why the world is so cold. Why she’s all alone and ain’t ever met her family, Mama’s always gone and she never met her daddy.
During these specific lyrics, Lisa is displayed alone and vulnerable in her bed using a high angle. Then her mum is displayed looking a mess, taking drugs without a father figure about.

I think this video is very effective. It allows the audience to get the full effect and impact of what Ludacris is rapping about. If the words of the song I choose sound like a story or as if it could be a film narrative then I will definitely choose to use a narrative music video.

Interpretive- Where the artist is actually doing everything that is said. The Lonely Land- I'm on a boat ft T-pain

Lonely Island's record label chose to use an interpretive music video because the group are pretty comical and the song is a sort of joke. The impact it has on the audience is a comical one. It makes them laugh.

At 1.16, when he says 'Flippin Burgers' he is actually flipping burgers on a BBQ.

Personally I would not want to use this style however if the song I chose had lyrics that were easy to action out and comical then I may.

Impressionist- Imagery matches the mood and feel of the song- Gnarles Barkley- Crazy

This song is very funky and I believe the record label chose this because it adds to the funk. The colours and design go to the beat of the song which emphasises the specific intstruments and makes the video more interesting. There is a lot going on in this video and it will have a positive impact on the audience as they will be focused onto the video to make sure they see everything. I will like to use something along the lines of this video however at times it can be very repetitive and boring so I would have to ensure it is enticing.

Surrealism/Abstract- Feature the element of surprise. DJ Snake ft Lil John- Turn down for what

I believe the institution chose to make this music video in a surrealist style because there is very little words spoken and it is a trap track. Music videos of this genre tend to be random however this video stands above all for being the most weird and surprising. I believe that this video will have a comical and 'WTF' reaction from people as what happens is unexpected and so crude. I would love to create something like this as it is funny and has the element of surprise which I believe is necessary when creating a music video.

Animation- Where the whole music video is not real life but a cartoon. Shanks and Bigfoot- Sweet like chocolate.

I believe the reason why the record label made this music video an animation is because the girl singing in the video sounds like a child and the song is about chocolate which is sweet and something little kids like. The fact it is an animation further emphasizes the childlike essence this song gives out. This would impact the audience where they would feel like a child again or it might just make them hungry. It would be great to create an animation however with the time that we have been give I highly doubt we will be able to finish this at the right time.

Intertextuality- When one text refers to another- to make sense the audience need to know the original. Robbie Williams- You know me.

The intertextual reference in this music video is to Alice in Wonderland. Robbie is playing the rabbit. I believe that his record label chose this because it's different and also adds a childlike feel to it. It will attract people who are fond of the story and the impact will be reminiscing of the story. It would be great to use intertextuality however I need to ensure who exactly my target audience is and that if they are aware of the original text I am referring to.

Parody- A comical version of an original song- it exaggerates featured of the original. Can't Remember to forget you (Parody)

This is a parody to the original song by Shakira- Can't remember to forget you. This parody is very funny and takes the mick out of the original video and lyrics. It is funny because the original song is very sensual and sexy whereas they have made a big joke out of everything that happens in the video. It has a comical impact on the audience and makes them want to watch the original.

Pastiche/Homage- is the imitation of a texts features by another text. Gramaphondzie- Why don't you

This song uses the lady that is featured in the original song. She sings the same part but gramaphondzie is a DJ and remixed it. The record label chose this because if they are going to take a clip out of a song it would be good to have a woman who looks the part singing it. It s a very old song and they have displayed that by making her black and white. The audience will be enticed to see the original song. I would really enjoy making a video similar to this, blending the past and present together.

Referencing- Putting in actual footage of a film. Alicia Keys ft Kendrick Lamar- It's on again

I believe that their record labels chose this style of video because this film 'The Amazing Spiderman 2' was supposed to be really. It had large audience appeal and if these artists featured on the films official track then their own fanbase would increase as more people would get to hear them. Fans of the film would enjoy the film and people who havent seen the film will also want to watch the film as there are clips in the video.
